Kharaj-Vocal Exercise

Connect in the early hours of the morning and,
through traditional and meditative Kharaj exercise,
feel the vibrations of your voice resonating
in your lower abdomen as you expand the
depth of your voice accompanied by the Tānpura

This meditative vocal exercise traditionally begins and ends before sunrise. In the Indian musical system, the word Kharaj refers to the individually variable fundamental tone in the lower octave. The Kharaj vocal exercise is an essential part of Dhrupad singing. Here, the notes of the lower octave are sung slowly and evenly in order to stabilize the lowest fundamental tone (Kharaj). Solid breath control serves as the foundation for strong vocal performance. Through regular Kharaj vocal exercises, the voice can gradually be opened up, strengthened and fortified in the lower octaves, allowing the vibrations to be felt in the lower abdominal area. This vocal exercise has proven to be an effective method in Indian vocal practice for refining vocal depth, breath control, and resonance. The rich chest and abdominal resonance in the lower range gives the voice a warmth of timbre that is which is of central importance in Indian Classical Music.

The Kharaj vocal exercise is accompanied by the mystical sounds of the Tanpura (plucked string instrument) as well as breathing exercises from Yoga (prāṇāyāma). The Tanpura is an Indian lute that is rhythmically plucked, and due to the unique design of its bridge, it produces a rich, multidimensional sound spectrum. The delicate sounds of the Tanpura can sensitize the musical ear. Through regular meditative merging with its multidimensional sound spectrum, the `inner ear´ can open up to the perception of the omnipresent sound of anahat Nāda

No musical knowledge required. Musical ear and singing ability are an advantage.

The accompaniment of the Tanpura gives my offerings a unique and distinctive character. Its enchanting vibrations are both my musical guide and the core sonic foundation woven into each of my offers. The natural harmonic series (pure intervals) unfolds from its mysterious ocean of overtone-rich vibrations – a silent awakening from the depths of sound. Through regular meditative merging with its multidimensional sound spectrum, the `inner ear´ can open up to the perception of the omnipresent sound of anahat Nāda

Inspired by the creative improvisational mastery of my Gurus, I draw from the rich spectrum of improvisational techniques from Indian Raag Music to create individual designs for syllable singing. Each musical presentation unfolds melodically and intuitively, tailored to the participants, the hour, and the spirit of the moment. In particular, the Sound Journeys are accessible to all age groups, including the individual stages of life of Adults, Children and the Unborn.
